DISCLAIMER: This is going to be one of the most controversial reviews I have ever given, if we don’t have the same opinions on this series, then that’s totally fine. I'm open to discussions (we can have a chat through Instagram or TikTok) but please keep it respectful and safe for others to share their own perspectives in the book/reading community.

It took me 4 books to finally realise that I was reading the same book all over again.

I am not exaggerating or shaming Ana Huang and her beloved readers/fans, I totally understand and respect your preferences on book tropes and favourite authors. I am specifically talking about myself that I did not enjoy the Twisted series. This does not mean that I hate Ana or readers who love the series.

This is apparently one of the most popular and highly-recommended series on BookTok/Bookstagram. I decided to give it a try and I did not finish the 4th book which was Twisted Lies. Here are the main reasons to back up my reviews and opinions of why I didn’t enjoy the series and stopped at the middle of the 4th book:

  1. The Romance trope was overused. Twisted Love, Twisted Games, and Twisted Lies used the grumpy x sunshine trope and somehow Alex, Rhys and Christian are billionaire/millionaire/super rich, except for Twisted Hate that both of them were enemies, both were sassy and extroverted that I think I enjoyed the banter in that book more than the other 3. And it was always a traumatised man + traumatised girl throughout all the 4 books, they somehow healed each other and lived happily ever after. I have nothing against this but I clearly got bored of it while reading the 4th book and suddenly realised that I just read the same trope all over again. Of course, the details and positions/careers/backgrounds of the FMCs and MMCs in each book are different but in general, Ana Huang used the same trope and I lost my interest.

  2. The books were too repetitive, especially Twisted Lies. I just talked about the trope and this is my discussion about how Ana used her words. My observation was Twisted Lies was the most repetitive out of the 4 books, whenever Christian appeared in front of Stella then he was described with words such as “sharp jawlines”, “his face was sculpted by Michelangelo”, “whiskey eyes”, etc. not to say that Ana brought up Stella’s problematic family multiple times and highlighted that she was under the pressure of becoming “the perfect child” to earn her parents’ and sister’s respect with so many lines. Personally, I felt this was unnecessary repeating the already-known details throughout the book like that.

  3. I know I have a high chance of getting cancelled if I said this but I felt like this series was written from the perspective of a man. Now before you come at me, I only said I felt this was written from the perspective of a man, NOT WRITTEN BY A MAN, and there’s a huge difference to that, of course all the credits go to Ana Huang. The main characters lusted over each other really quick, maybe right at the start of the book if I remember correctly. To make it clear, I have nothing against smut or spicy scenes as long as they make sense and add up to the tension of the main characters, but Ana’s characters turned out to have really quick lustful thoughts right before their relationships’ development or even their own development.

Overall, these are the main reasons why I DNF (did not finish) the last book in the series. I might say I enjoyed Twisted Games’ story plot more than the other 3, my preference is a strong, girl-bossed girl who knew what she wanted and she did everything in her power to turn things into her favour, and that was exactly what I saw in Bridget, the royal drama and fights made me more invested in this book, so I gave it a 3 star rating.
